Japanese Studies

Our  Study Abroad Programs offers students from outside Japan a truly unique opportunity-to learn about Japan, its people, culture and language-in a bilingual educational environment.

Whether you wish to enhance career prospects in Japan or make your portfolios more attractive to graduate schools and scholarships back home, students who spend a trimester or a year at KIU will gain experiences that will help them mature as individuals on the way to living useful, fulfilling lives.

Study Abroad Programs

There are a number of different options for you to study abroad.  There is  our Short-Term Study Abroad Program  which is for a single trimester. Also, there is a Long-Term Study Abroad Program which is typically one academic year. We also offer more traditional programs such as our Undergraduate and Associates of Liberal Arts programs.

Short-Term Study Abroad Program (One Trimester)

This is one of the easiest way to experience Japan while earning college credit. Since the one trimester is around 90 days long, you can visit from abroad without the typical obstacles of securing a visa. This is also very convenient for most students who wish to experience Japan but are unsure about living overseas for an extended time.  Also because KIU academic schedule is quite compatible with colleges abroad, it is quite possible to visit Japan several times in your college career (all the time earning college credit*) and still graduate on time!

Long-Term Study Abroad Program (One Year)

While our Short-Term Study Abroad Program is one of the easiest way to experience Japan, our Long-Term Study Abroad Program is great for those that are interested in not only a life changing experience or earning college credit but actually want to become fluent in a foreign language like Japanese. Typically in a total language immersion environment, although you do learn a lot in the first few months something amazing happens to most students after about six months; they start communicating in Japanese! Again because KIU academic schedule is quite compatible with colleges abroad, it is quite possible to visit Japan for a full year during your college career (all the time earning college credit*) and not only graduate on time but be almost fluent in Japanese.

More Traditional Academics Programs

Our Undergraduate programs include a four year degree as a Bachelors of Arts and Science, and a two year degree as an Associates of Liberal Arts. Visit our Academics Programs page to learn more.

* Note: Students should check with their academic advisors about what courses are transferable before enrolling at KIU.
