As the president of Kyoto International University, I am happy to introduce KIU Academy to you. It is a bilingual elementary, junior and high school that serves as a stepping-stone into English language universities. KIU Academy was created to meet the needs of missionary children, returnees and the children of other internationally-minded people and to provide them with the best possible learning environment.

KIU Academy is a blend of East and West. It combines the Western emphasis on reasoning and logic, synthesis and self-expression with the Japanese penchant for detail to provide a well-rounded educational program.

The goal of KIU Academy's educational program is to broaden the students' horizons while teaching them to think and reason, to take responsibility and to express themselves. The teachers serve as motivators and active role models in the educational process.

KIU Academy lays a solid foundation for life by introducing students to vital skills in the traditional subjects as well as in computer, oral expression, logic and writing.

In addition to missionaries, there are thousands of Japanese who have lived overseas whose children face a difficult and often traumatic reentry into an alien and often inhospitable school culture when they return to Japan.

As president of KIU, I had the dream of carrying the university's experience in bilingual education over to include a high school. Since we originally created our high school program, our middle school and elementary school programs were added in an effort to meet the increasing needs of parents with younger students.

If you are interested in giving your children a bilingual and bicultural education, I invite you to come visit our campus and see what KIU Academy can do to meet the needs of your children.

Sincerely yours,

Peter N. Blocksom
