Educational Philosophy

Learning for the Future

Our world is changing at a phenomenal pace. Technology and information are increasing at unimaginable rates. Our students need to develop skills and knowledge that will adequately equip them in a world that is different from previous generations.

At KIU Academy, we emphasize the development of such skills as critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and collaboration. With such skills the children of today will be better equipped to handle the challenges of tomorrow.

An International Perspective

Living in a foreign country affords a young person the opportunity of a lifetime. Unfortunately, this chance is often marred by a lack of understanding and appreciation of the culture. Traditional international schools have long been breeding grounds for a "we-they" sentiment. Mutual appreciation and understanding and the breaking down of stereotypes and prejudice begin with the understanding of each other's language, history, culture and government. This mutual understanding is one of KIU Academy's goals in education.

The Role of the Educator

Teachers make a tremendous impact on young people's lives. KIU Academy's educational staff is committed to respecting and appreciating students and to encouraging them to become the best they can be.

Teachers must be student motivators. Excellent teachers are those who love their students and have a contagious enthusiasm for what they teach.

KIU teachers come from a wide variety of educational backgrounds. Many have been involved with bilingual education in some form or another. All have cross-cultural experience, and many are able to communicate in both English and Japanese.
